Lead contamination mitigation work will take place next week below the Hakalau Bridge.

Lead contamination mitigation work will take place next week below the Hakalau Bridge.

The state Department of Transportation issued a release Friday stating soil testing at the bridge’s base found quantities of lead that “exceeded allowable levels.”

Additional testing to determine the extent and depth of the contamination begins next week. The department did not immediately respond to questions regarding what days would be affected or when the initial testing took place.

Public access to the base of the bridge is restricted until further notice.

The state Department of Health’s Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response Office is working with the DOT on the mitigation efforts.

Test results are expected two to three months after next week’s sampling is complete.

Soil testing also will take place beneath the Kolekole Bridge. Early screenings showed low levels of lead. The additional testing is a precaution, the DOT said.
